This space is designed to be a place where you can "park" your ideas about what you would like to see next year from the Literacy Cohort.
Let me share an example:
Jen may decide that she wants to focus on struggling readers. Coincidentally, so may Carol. Todd may have liked the cooperative strategies that we talked about and wants to pursue them a little deeper next year and share them with his team. Liz may be interested in learning more about visualization strategies.
In my mind, it is positively fine if you all want to dig deeper into different areas of literacy. We can differentiate YOUR learning! Please post ideas or questions here in the Parking Lot.

I'm interested in learning more about visualization strategies, questioning and recognizing author's purpose.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in actually learning in two different areas, since I cover basically two different ends of the spectrum in any given day with students. I am interested in learning more ideas to help struggling readers - low readers, but not necessarily SPED students. I am also interested in learning some new things to try with my Gifted & Talented students - things that are beyond what they receive in the regular classroom, things that will really STRETCH their minds.
ReplyDeleteFor next year, in high school science, I would like to learn more about how to integrate writing into the weave of the days in science. (I’ve read a bit on it.) I am more interested in developing the students’ expressive language than in giving them strategies to glean information from textbooks. I’m also interested in getting a variety of non-text books into their hands and scheming up some rules of the game that have the students accountable to each other through a learned and routine interaction, rather than to the threat of a bad grade, for getting into their books.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to look at integrating more writing in science and math. The other interest of mine involves struggling readers. I try to steer clear of text books since I have text books from 1995 and am interested in helping my struggling readers with comprehension.
ReplyDeleteI would like to look at two things next year. One, I want to find and use assessment tools for determining reading strategies used (and not
ReplyDeleteused) by readers.
Then, I want to learn about different models for creating reading groups based on strategies.
Second, I have talked with other staff
members about the idea of how to share literacy strategies with other staff members: how do we, first, instill the notion that all teachers must be teachers of literacy, especially reading? And how do we share literacy strategies with
teachers in the content areas?
I second Todd's suggestion on wanting assessment tools for determining reading strategies used by students.
ReplyDeleteI would like to develop
before/during/after reading activities.
